West News
West
Middle School is currently in the Candidacy Phase of the International
Baccalaureate Program (IB).
What
is IB?
Founded
in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational
foundation offering four highly respected programs of international education
Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP) Diploma Program (DP)
and the Career Program (CP). Each develops
the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn
and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Schools must be authorized, by the IB
organization, to offer any of the programs. The MYP starts in 6th
grade and goes to the 10th grade; West is a part of the MYP.
What
is MYP?
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Program (MYP),
sometimes referred to as pre-IB, is an educational program offered around the
world as part of the International
Baccalaureate (IB) continuum. MYP is intended to prepare
students between the ages of 11 to 16 for the two-year IB Diploma Program. This period, encompassing early puberty and
mid-adolescence, is a particularly critical phase of personal and
intellectual development and requires a program that helps students
participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly
interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically
is as important as learning facts. 1

How
does MYP benefit my student?
Students
at International Baccalaureate® (IB) World Schools are given a unique
education.
They
will:
- be encouraged to think
independently and drive their own learning
- take part in programs of education
that can lead them to some of the highest ranking universities around the
world
- become more culturally aware,
through the development of a second language
- be able to engage with people in an
increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.2
