Bio:

I am SFC. Don Brookins, JROTC Army Instructor for Desoto West Middle School. I have been teaching in this position since 2009. Prior to joining the West Middle School team I spent 26 years active duty, in the United States Army. My duty stations/travels included: Germany, Romania, and Canada. Prior to joining the service, I grew up locally and attended FWISD schools. I currently reside in Fort Worth, with my wife of 22 years, Angela. I have 2 children, a son Tyler 20and a daughter, Taylor 18. I am a lifetime member of the National Guard Association in the State of Texas, and AFT. I am a supporter of breast cancer awareness and the race for a cure.

After graduating High School I joined the U.S. Army.  My journey started as an E1 to an E7 Retired SFC. During my 26 years in the military I served in a various capacities of challenging and rewarding troop, staff and leadership assignments. As a member of the U.S. Army I have had many honors and commendations for: Support & service with Hurricane Rita and Katrina, Operation Iron Alliance in Romania special training.  Along with military training I have enhance my military and civilian success with studies in Business Administration through Columbia University. My special training, experience, and civilian education have been such a beneficial source in my life.  I believe that we as individuals learn and educate ourselves on different levels.  We throughout life take what is meaningful and relevant to our life and interests and gain knowledge and experience that best help us navigate through life’s marvelous journey.  As I closed a 26 years chapter in the U.S. Army I wanted to continue my journey working with the youth of today to share my opportunities and to inform them that Education is not preparation for life; but education is life itself in the famous words of John Dewey.

I decided to become an educator to combat the myth that public education is not exceptional; being a product of the public education system I know that this is not the truth. I have had the best of both worlds. I have travel the world to see advantages and disadvantages and the key to success is education. Michael Forbes said, “Educations purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” In my experience with FWISD as a child and here at Desoto West Middle School that is exactly what happens on a daily basis.

My goals and plans for the future are one in the same; I want young people to know that education is the most powerful tool in which we as individuals can change the world. Not by War, Money or fame these things come and gonch but the mind is a terrible thing to waste. My legacy will be for my students and everyone who encounters me to develop a passion for learning & others, this is to experience real joy.
